What is a Crawl Space Vapor Barrier?
A crawl space vapor barrier is a heavy-duty plastic liner that is placed directly over the soil on the floor of your crawl space. In Florida, the ground beneath our homes is almost always damp due to our high water table and frequent rain. This moisture constantly evaporates upwards, raising the humidity level in the crawl space and contributing to mold growth and wood rot.
Our Installation Process
Protect Your Home From The Ground Up
Step 1
We first clear and level the crawl space floor, removing debris that could puncture the liner.
Step 2
We install a tough, 20-mil thick, multi-layered liner across the entire floor, overlapping and sealing all seams.
Step 3
The barrier is secured to the floor and foundation walls, creating a continuous shield against moisture.
When is a Vapor Barrier Enough
(And When is it Not)?
Installing a high-quality vapor barrier is a critical first step and a massive improvement over a bare dirt crawl space. For some homes, it can make a significant difference in reducing musty odors and dampness.
However, it’s important to understand the limitations. A vapor barrier only stops moisture coming from the ground. It does not stop:
Humid Air from Vents
It will not prevent hot, humid Florida air from entering through open crawl space vents, which is a major source of moisture.
Water Leaks or Flooding
It is not a waterproofing system and will not stop bulk water from entering during heavy rains or from plumbing leaks.
Existing Mold or Pests
It will not remove existing mold or get rid of a current pest infestation.
